Who can contest an election?

 

For the General Elections:

Any Maltese citizen registered as an elector in the General Elections Electoral Register.

 

For the Local Councils Elections:

Any EU citizen or a national of the UK registered as an elector in the Local Councils Electoral Register.

Mayors/Deputy Mayors are elected if they obtain the majority of votes from the party which get the majority of votes in the first count, provided that they are over the age of 18 years.

 

For the Members of the European Parliament Election:

Any EU citizen registered as a voter in the European Union Electoral Register.

If you are a foreign EU citizen standing for election, you will need to declare that you are not standing for election in any other country and that you were not deprived of the right to vote in your home Member State.
